The 2018 WENRA Fall Plenary Meeting took place in the beginning of November in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. It was hosted by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI. "It was a very fruitful WENRA meeting" says Hans Wanner, WENRA Chair and Director General of ENSI. "We agreed on new strategic objectives that will guide WENRA’s work for the coming years. The strategic discussion was broad an inclusive, and all WENRA members and observers could be heard. Now, we need to allow the time necessary to reach the right conclusions in this regard." It is planned, that WENRA’s new strategy, for the period of 2019-2023 should be finalised, adopted and published at the next Spring Plenary Meeting 2019.

WENRA’s new strategic objectives are directed towards issues like stakeholder involvement (industry and other non-European regulatory bodies and organisations), the role of WENRA’s Safety Reference Levels and the role of WENRA as a player in the global nuclear safety field.

WENRA also agreed to continue its work on the interface between nuclear safety and security. The designated task force will expand its mandate to include cyber-security and will report back to the next plenary meeting. It was also agreed that it might be useful to reach out to other expert regulatory associations such as the European Nuclear Security Regulators Association ENSRA to determine if there are possible areas for further cooperation in this area.

The Working Group on Research Reactors presented its accomplished work until now on developing a set of Safety Reference Levels specifically for research reactors. It was agreed that the working group also includes the recommendations on ageing management stemming from the first European Topical Peer Review on ageing management in its work programme.
