WENRA held its spring plenary meeting in Berne, Switzerland on 26-27 April 2017. “It was another fruitful WENRA meeting,” says WENRA Chair Hans Wanner. “The open and frank discussions also on difficult and challenging issues that are being held within WENRA are very important for the continued strengthening of nuclear safety in the WENRA member and observer countries and also for other countries and organisations involved in nuclear safety.”
During the meeting a number of challenges and issues were discussed. WENRA welcomed the draft report prepared by the Ad-hoc working group on request by ENSREG on “Timely Implementation of reasonably practicable safety improvements to existing nuclear power plants.” The document will go through a final drafting round where comments from the public consultation will be taken into account before being submitted to ENSREG.
The Chairs of the two Working Groups, Waste Disposal and Decommissioning (WGWD) and Reactor Harmonisation (RHWG) reported on their recent activities. WGWD reported that the group has finished the editorial work of its Safety Reference Levels (SRL) and will now start focusing on benchmarking the remaining disposal and processing self assessments.
RHWG is currently covering a wide range of activities including the peer review of the implementation of the 2014 SRLs. The peer review has been concluded and a corresponding report will be drafted and published once finalised in late 2017.
