WENRA has a New Chairperson

At the end of the 20th plenary meeting of WENRA, which took place at Chateau Štiřín in the Czech Republic on 10 – 11 November 2009, the WENRA Chairperson, Ms. Dana Drábová from the Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) completed her three-year mandate and passed the baton of WENRA leadership to Mr. Jukka Laaksonen, Head of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). The new Chair will lead WENRA until Autumn 2011.

During the last meeting under the Czech Presidency, WENRA members discussed the future of their “club” in the light of a changing international environment as well as new challenges. In this context they confirmed that WENRA is, thanks to its specific features, a unique and irreplaceable forum for sharing and exchange of information, knowledge and experience among participating regulators.

This meeting was also the second WENRA plenary attended by “non-nuclear” EU members invited as observers (so far five countries have expressed their interest in participating in WENRA activities – Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland). WENRA members at Štiřín also decided to establish closer cooperation with and grant observer status to Armenia, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, which could bring new experience and further enrich the WENRA knowledge base. Also the three new observers will take part in the next meetings of both WENRA plenary and its working groups. The level of their engagement in WENRA activities will be a subject of further mutual consideration.

The Chairpersons of both working groups, Mr. Olivier Gupta (Reactor Harmonization Working Group; RHWG) and Mr. Stefan Theis (Working Group on Waste and Decommissioning; WGWD), informed WENRA members about the latest progress as regards activities of their groups and presented their future tasks as well.

RHWG has already published safety reference levels for nuclear reactors (January 2008) and is now working on a new task - safety objectives for new power reactors. WGWD is continuing to fulfill its original mandate and in addition has been tasked to formulate safety reference levels for geological disposal facilities.

The 21st WENRA plenary meeting is scheduled for 25-26 March 2010 and will be hosted by STUK.
