WENRA terms of reference revised

WENRA had its 21st plenary meeting in Helsinki, Finland on 25 – 26 March 2010. The Terms of Reference of WENRA were revised in the meeting reflecting better the current practices of WENRA. E.g. the new approach of having some European countries as WENRA observers was elaborated.

Terms of Reference were initially signed in 1999 and they have been revised once before in 2003. The newly revised WENRA Terms of Reference will be added on the WENRA website after all the signatures from the heads of the member nuclear regulatory authorities have been collected.

It was at the same time the first WENRA plenary attended by the Russian Federation and Ukraine invited as observers. These countries can bring new experience and further enrich WENRA knowledge base and were warmly welcomed to the group. Previously also some “non-nuclear” EU countries (Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland) have expressed their interest in participating in WENRA activities as observers.

Chairpersons of both working groups, Mr. Olivier Gupta (RHWG) and Mr. Stefan Theis (WGWD), informed WENRA members about the latest progress as regards activities of their groups and presented their future tasks as well. RHWG has earlier published safety reference levels for the existing nuclear reactors (latest revision was issued in January 2008) and a report on progress to implement the reference levels in the national regulations is planned to be published in January 2011. As another result of the RHWG work, draft safety objectives for new power reactors were published in the beginning of 2010 on WENRA website for comments.

WGWD is continuing to fulfill its original mandate and in addition has been tasked to formulate safety reference levels for geological disposal facilities. WGWD will publish the draft safety reference levels for waste and spent fuel storage after its April 2010 meeting on the WENRA website for stakeholders comments.

22nd WENRA Plenary meeting is scheduled for 9-10 November 2010 and will be hosted by Slovakia.
